Beyond the Colonial State: Kurdish Alternative Justice and State Building
Guest Speaker: Dr. Latif Tas (SOAS, Syracuse, Princeton)
Many stateless minorities within existing nation states around the world are attempting to establish their own authority and institutions. Kurds in the Middle East (Turkey, Syria, Iraq, and Iran) are an example of this trend, having created their own parallel justice institutions as a means of forgoing an alternative governmentality.
Dr. Tas will explain how alternative justice and parallel state-making processes constitute important aspects of how a new political group might challenge power at the center within existing nation states. Latif Tas is an interdisciplinary scholar who has been conducting research on various dimensions of socio-legal, political and armed conflict in the Middle East and Europe since the early 2000s.
