 As university administrators and faculty are busy developing, implementing, and revising their curricula and strategic plans, important social, political, and economic trends have been taking place with a significant impact on the state of higher education. Success in achieving the mission of a university requires careful analysis of historical and current societal developments and a sound agreement on the purpose of education by all constituents. This talk will reflect on the purpose of education by remembering the perspectives of several influential thinkers from history and serve as a discussion forum for faculty who want to have an impact on shaping the future of higher education.
