This workshop explores ungrading, an alternative assessment practice that replaces traditional grading with holistic feedback and self-assessment to promote student growth. Participants will examine the pros and cons of ungrading, including its potential to reduce grade anxiety and foster intrinsic motivation, as well as challenges like lack of clarity and accountability. Special attention will be given to the impact of ungrading on neurodivergent, first-generation, and first-year students, who may face unique barriers such as reliance on concrete grading systems for validation and adjustment to college-level expectations. The session will also cover key considerations for implementing ungrading effectively, ensuring equity, and designing inclusive practices that support diverse learners. Attendees will leave with practical strategies for navigating the complexities of ungrading in their own classrooms.
